QUINTESSENCE MAGAZINE
March/April 2002 - "A very young band here from
Wisconsin with a very good 4-song demo of true Metal.
They are currently working on their debut for a Summer
release and just hearing these 4 songs alone tells me
it's going to be a pretty interesting release. The music
is in an older style of Running Wild, Megadeth,
Metallica, Metal Church and Iron Maiden. Good mix of
melodic and heavy rhythms with raspy to synchronized
vocals keeping things at a good flow without any
boredom. The 4-piece has only been around since 2000 and
you would never guess by listening. I'm not sure how the
reception of this will be in the U.S. but I'm sure
they'll be extra smart and spread this overseas a bit
since the market over there praises this type of Metal
better than our country (unfortunately! We won't get
into that again since you know my thoughts on the trendy
U.S. media!).
Here's more info to get in touch with the band, it's
worth your time, trust me!"
FROM
THE PIT - "Dark Shift as a whole are a unique
mix. Not what you would quite expect from metal bands
right now. This demo consists of 4 songs. From beginning
to end, its just pure metal. Obviously influenced by
older types of metal, Dark Shift breaks the mold. With
insane guitar riffs, tight vocals, perfect drumming,
these are the guys to look out for. Tracks: 1. Lost
forever, 2. The last door, 3. Nevermore, 4. Keeper. The
second track reminded me so much of older Metallica it
was awesome. Where as, the rest of the tracks I cannot
really compare to anyone because they sound so original.
Dark Shift is definitely a great band to look out for."
METAL CRYPT - Hehehe. I'm happy. Over the past
year or so, a few young bands have started to appear and
rather than jump into the power/death/black metal
bandwagon, decided to play traditional heavy metal and
thrash, of course heavily influenced by the 80s sound.
Dark Shift is such a band. This 4-song demo
contains a mix of thrash and heavy metal and their music
speaks for itself - cool, catchy guitar solos, somewhat
chaotic drumming (in a good way), and clean vocals that
sometimes remind me of James Hetfield in Black Album-era
Metallica. One song, "The Last Door" even reminds
me a little of some material on "Ride The Lightning".
This one is the most remarkable of the four: part
ballad, part heavy/thrashy. Excellent song - and the
other three songs are not far behind! Those are pretty
fast-paced, no ballad-like stuff on those, but some
screechy solos!
I wouldn't say that Dark Shift
invent anything (that's not a requirement for good music
anyway!), but their music is well played, honest,
catchy, and they need no artifices to get the job done.
This is bare bones metal like metal should be. Kick ass.
As a bonus, the sound is pretty damn good for a demo.
Their songs are on mp3.com, so check them out, unless
you're suffering of neck pains, because you've got some
major head banging ahead of you. Somebody please sign
those guys NOW.
